Welcome to SportsAid
SportsAid was founded in 1976 to provide financial assistance to Britain’s amateur sportsmen and women. The aim was to help them prepare for competitions against better-funded, overseas athletes.
SportsAid is the only UK charity directly helping talented young British sports people. More often than not their only sponsors are Mum and Dad, so every bit of independent recognition and help that they get at this stage makes a huge difference. Lottery funding has helped British sport enormously in recent years, but it cannot fund every aspect of sport, and this money rarely trickles down to individuals in the 12-18 years old group. That’s why our work is so vital.
If we don’t fund this generation, who will?
Peterborough SportsAid was formed in 2004 focusing on giving awards to youngsters aged 12 to 18 in able-bodied sports and for all ages in disabled sports to help with costs such as travel, training, accommodation, competition fees and equipment.
Since 2004 Peterborough SportsAid has awarded grants in excess of £110,000 to over 250 young sports men and women in the Peterborough area.

Paul Charles Merson (born 20 March 1968) is an English football television pundit and former professional footballer and manager. Originally a forward, Merson found success as an attacking midfielder and playmaker later in his career.
After making his debut for Arsenal in the 1986–87 season, Merson went on to play eleven seasons with the North London club. While with the Gunners, Merson was a key player in the club’s success under Scottish manager George Graham, winning the Football League Championship twice, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. In 1997, he joined Middlesbrough, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League and finish as runner-up in the 1997–98 Football League Cup. After joining Aston Villa in 1998, Merson went on to become club captain and played for the team in the 2000 FA Cup Final, the last ever to be held at the original Wembley Stadium.
Merson was capped 21 times for the England national football team and represented the nation at 1992 UEFA European Championship and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
